Goodbye Overdrive, Hello Libby

The OverDrive app will be discontinued on May 1st, requiring readers everywhere to switch to Libby, OverDrive’s newer reading app. Libby is user-friendly, making finding and downloading digital materials easier than ever. Libby debuted in 2017 and gets much more use than the OverDrive app, so it no longer made sense for the company to maintain both apps.

Switching to Libby is easy. Download the app on your mobile device to get started.

Once you add your library card to Libby, all your loans and holds from Overdrive will be waiting on your Shelf. You won’t lose your place in line for any items you have on hold.

If you have a Wish List, you’ll be prompted to import it from Overdrive:

If you created wish lists in the OverDrive app, you can automatically import them into Libby as a smart tag.

  • You’ll be prompted via an in-app notification to import your wish list. To get started, go to Menu and select the Sync Wish Lists notification.
  • Your wish list items will become a tag that’s available on your Shelf. You can read and listen to your selections via the Libby app.

Follow the prompts in the notification to either:

  • Create a new tag for your wish list. (This is a good option if you’re new to Libby.)
  • Merge your OverDrive wish list into an existing tag. (This is a good option if you already use a tag to track titles you want to read.)
  • Once created, you’ll find your wish list tag under Shelf> tags.

Do you prefer to read ebooks on a Kindle? Check out your ebook through the Libby app, then send it to your Kindle:

  1. In Libby, tap loans at the top of the screen.
  2. Tap Read With….
  3. Tap Kindle.
  4. You’ll be taken to Amazon’s website. Sign into your Amazon account.
  5. Verify the “Deliver to:” device and tap Get Library Book to finish getting the book.

If you would rather use a computer instead of a mobile device to access downloads Libby works on a computer, too. Visit libbyapp.com to browse, search, read or listen on your computer.
