Are you looking for your next book recommendation? Do you like discussions with bookish people who talk about their favorite stories and well-crafted writing? Do you feel stuck in a literary rut and need suggestions? Russell Library has the solution!

We’re proud to introduce Top Shelf with Russell Library, a new podcast where you’ll hear about compelling reads from the people who know books best. Brought to you by the team who produced Middletown Strong, this podcast will focus on what we love most: books and the libraries that celebrate them. Every month, our librarians will recommend books focused on a specific theme, from beach reads to banned books to thrillers with a twist. They’ll also highlight library services to inform and delight you, such as: Did you know that the Russell Library offers notary services? A digital lab? A silent book club? Tune in for details about these services and so much more!

In our inaugural episode, Briana, Christy, Kim, and Stephanie discuss banned books and share stories with impact. These are books that opened our hearts and minds. They touch on the bittersweetness of growing up, finding your own path, and being able to share experiences with each other. These stories challenge preconceived notions about moving through the world and consider the many paths we can take through life. They offer hope.

Our hosts also share the many ways that libraries make these books available to readers – on the shelves, in displays, and on e-readers and tablets. Libraries offer safe spaces to find books that resonate with readers and encourage conversation. Library staff can recommend books that speak to your questions and areas of interest.

Intrigued? We hope you’ll consider joining us this month (and every month) for bookish discussion and library recommendations on Top Shelf with Russell Library. Our season starts this June. Check us out wherever you listen to podcasts or at the library’s website.

Top Shelf with Russell Library is a collaboration that includes staff from across the library. We are Shannon, Christy, Kate, Briana, Stephanie, Kim, Cate, and Dillon. When we’re not recording the podcast, we’re working at the service desks, selecting materials for the collection, and promoting the library throughout the community.
