Are you ready to play?

Hint hint: there might be a “cheat code” of sorts way down below…

What the heck are the Russell Library games?

In celebration of Russell Library’s 150th year serving Middletown, we decided to spread joy in 2026 by running the Russell Library Games. Between the anniversaries of our doors opening to the public (April 5) and our incorporation (November 17) players may join the Games and find opportunities around town to accumulate points in order to earn prizes.

The Russell Library Games are an interactive smartphone-based scavenger hunt similar to Pokémon GO, but hyperlocal with players chasing QR codes around Middletown and hunting “easter eggs” online.

Registration opens April 5.

Game play starts April 11.

The closing ceremony will be November 17.

Who can play the Russell Library Games?

Anybody can join the Russell Library Games, regardless of age or location. Whoever they are, they will need a smart phone or tablet to play. Those who live or work in Middletown are at a distinct advantage, since they are in close proximity to Russell Library and the participating locations where points can be earned.

Do I need a library card to play?

Nope! We do not require players to have a library card. However, “show us your library card” offers the highest point value of all (100 points), so it’s well worth your while to get one. (Note: We accept any library card for points, not just Russell cards.)

Library cards are loaded with perks anyway, so why not get yours?!? It’s free and you’ll get mad points to boot.

How do the Games work?

In a nutshell, players must join the Games to earn points and win prizes.

Players earn their first points simply by joining the games and adding an avatar. Additional points can be earned by scanning QR codes around Russell Library and at participating locations. More points can be earned by “finding Frances” on Russell Library’s website and newsletters. Frances sneaks into new places each month, so you’ll earn more points the more hiding places you uncover over time. You even earn points by checking the scoreboard regularly!

How do I track my points?

The easiest way to track your points is to keep an eye on the scoreboard. You can also view your total when you are logged in by clicking your name in the upper righthand corner of the Russell Library Games website. That will take you to your account, where you can scroll down to the Gamipress section to see your points balance and user earnings.

What’s the best way to win?

Some points can be earned one time only, while others can be earned daily or monthly. The fastest way to score big is to learn which points have the highest value and which can be earned repeatedly, then optimize your game play accordingly. Your best bet at winning the whole shebang is to stay engaged throughout the games, earning points consistently and taking advantage of every opportunity.

Okay, maybe it isn’t exactly a “cheat code,” but if you do the following you’re bound to become a top scorer:

  1. Study the points page carefully;
  2. Visit Russell Library regularly;
  3. Check out at Russell Library often;
  4. Attend library events and programs; and
  5. Visit participating locations.

To get a head start, don’t miss our birthday bash on Saturday, April 11. Players can have their cake and earn points, too. There will be games galore, including “Find Frances” (like a real life version of Where’s Waldo but searching for our founder, who will be wandering the stacks), old-school bingo, giant chess, air hockey, ping pong, assorted board games and puzzles for all ages. Caricature artists will be on hand to draw exaggerated portraits that their subjects may take home. Across our building you’ll see archival photos of Russell Library over the years. After hours the Eastern CT Paranormal Society will tell tale of their encounters in our historic building – don’t forget to register because it’ll reach capacity fast. By the end of the day many players will have earned enough points to take home their first prize!

What could I win?

One top score each month will win a $15 Downtown Business District gift card. The ultimate top score will win a $150 DBD gift card and the coveted Russell Library Games trophy. The runner-up will win a $50 DBD gift card.

Also, at regular intervals throughout the Games, players can earn Russell Library Love Club swag. Check out our prize page for more details.

How did you come up with this idea?

As librarians we believe in giving credit where it’s due. The Russell Library Games would not exist if the Ann Arbor District Library hadn’t inspired us with their Summer Game. We appreciate their ingenuity and the spirit of fun they brought to their community. We wanted to offer something similar to our beloved Middletown, so we developed the Russell Library Games with just such joy in mind.

We hope you enjoy the Games – we’ll see you on the scoreboard!
